Miyake-jima, the island of gas masks in Japan
Travelling to Miyake-jima in Japan requires a special accessory in your suitcase – a gas mask. You may wonder why?
Well, this island is also called the island of gas masks because it’s a volcanic island in the Izu archipelago in the Philippine Sea and if you want to visit it or live there, you must carry a gas mask all the time.
The island is covered with a cloud of harmful sulfur dioxide gas, spewed into the air by volcanic eruptions. The area’s heavy weather systems and cold make it worse. If the air quality gets bad enough, the town turns into a masked extra-terrestrial looking crowd of people seemingly all attending the same themed costume party.
People living there may seem funny to you but these citizens are already used to their daily face accessory and don’t feel uncomfortable wearing it. As medicine says, health always comes at first place. Scroll down and take a look at the atmosphere in this island before you decide visiting it!
