With temperatures that reach even – 71.2C, this Russian village located along the Indigirka River, 30 km northwest of Tomtor on the Kolyma Highway, gets the first award for the coldest place on Earth.

The village, which is home to around 500 people, in the 1920s and 1930s, was a stopover for reindeer herders who would water their flocks from the thermal spring.

But the Soviet government, in its efforts to settle nomadic populations, believing them to be difficult to control and technologically and culturally backward, made the site a permanent settlement. Ironically, Oymyakon actually means ‘non-freezing water’ due to a nearby hot spring.

This place may not be the perfect tourist attraction, but we are sure that after seeing this little, frozen place, you will definitely want to visit it, even if that means visiting the coldest place on Earth.

So if you thought it was cold where you are at the moment then a visit to the Russian village of Oymyakon might just change your mind. Until then, scroll down and take a look at this cold beauty that will freeze your bones!
