Copper Canyon

Copper Canyon (Spanish: Barranca del Cobre) is a chain of canyons in the Sierra Tarahumara region of southwestern Chihuahua, Mexico.

This canyon chain is larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon in the neighboring United States, even though the Grand Canyon is generally larger than any of the Copper Canyons individually. Although it could be a national park in Mexico, the canyons do not currently have such an official status, as this is hindered by disagreements between lumberjacks and the locals of Raramuri. This is one of the most remote places in Mexico because of its location in the Tarahumara mountain range. It offers incredible views.

How to get there

By plane

The nearest airport to Copper Canyon is in the city of Chihuahua (CUU). Flights can be selected, for example, here.

By train

The Chihuahua al PacĂfico Railroad, known as El Chepe, is a train line running from the Pacific coast of Los Mochis to the city of Chihuahua, passing through the canyon area. The train became famous for passing through the most picturesque landscapes in the world: it passes through magnificent places between El Fuerte and Krill, especially between El Fuerte and Bahuchivo, where the train rapidly rises to many thousands of feet. The route from Los Mochis goes east and is more picturesque, because in the west trains often go through the most picturesque areas after dark. In winter, it is more problematic to observe the beauty from the windows due to short days or if the 2nd class train is behind schedule.

By bus

The Copper Canyon is well served by bus services. Buses from Transportes TurĂsticos Noroeste travel from Chihuahua to Disaverdo, stopping in Creel and other small cities such as Cuauhtemoc and San Juanito.
