Goli Otok also called Barren or naked Island, as former inmate Josip Zoretic describes it in his book Hell in the Adriatic, was a prison camp, a Yugoslav gulag and few people knew about it.

Tito turned the island into a high-security prison in 1949 one year after Yugoslavia broke away from the Stalinist Soviet sphere and declared itself “neutral” under its own system of “market socialism”, informally called “Titoism”.

It is not clear how many people were forced into hard labor, how many lost their lives out of dread, humiliation and the torments in this prison. Word-of-mouth indications range between 12,000 and 60,000 inmates who were held on Goli Otok, while serious sources proceed on the assumption that 16,000 political prisoners have been incarcerated on the island and 400 died.

The prison was shut down on 30 December 1988 and completely abandoned in 1989. Since then it has been left to ruin and became a tourist attraction. Scroll down and take a closer look at it!

Abandoned 10 years ago, the beautiful and creepy Nara Dreamland park in Japan is the perfect place for photographers because sometimes abandoned places like this are more attractive to capture than anything else.

Nara Dreamland was built in 1961 as Japan’s answer to Disneyland, which had opened in California the previous decade. Towards the end of its life the park struggled with low visitor numbers and was eventually forced to close. Now the sweets in the vending machines are no longer safe to eat and the heart-pounding rides are now as still as the fiberglass mascots which haunt the landscape.

This place is a popular destination for urban explorers. Additionally, many have reported hearing strange noises near the park’s boats. Some speculate that it may be caused by a running water pump or a type of bull frog. Would you pack your bags and check where the sound comes from? If you’re an adventurous traveler you would, but if you only want to check this creepy yet amazing park, just scroll down and enjoy!

You must be wondering why Aokigahara is haunted? Well, the story you will hear about this, beautiful and creepy place will shock you.

It’s also known as Sea of Trees, Demon forest and Suicide forest. Yes, you’ve heard correctly! Suicide forest because of the 500 confirmed suicides there during 1950’s.

Called “the perfect place to die,” this forest is the world’s second most popular place for suicide, because the Golden Gate Bridge is being the first – we will talk about it in some of our next posts.

Legend says that this all started after Seicho Matsumoto published a novel by the name of Kuroi Kaiju or Black Sea of Trees in 1960. The story ends with two lovers committing suicide in the forest so many people believe that’s what started it all.

Located at the base of Mt. Fuji, Aokigahara is undoubtedly one of the creepiest places in Japan. Would you want to visit and explore this forest or would it be too scary for you?
