Why Russian women are all sour-faced on the Instagram? They are mocking sexist statement made by Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Pavel Astakhov.
This flash mob has started with mr. Astakhov commenting the arranged wedding of the 17-year-old Chechen girl with the police chief, Commissioner said that in the Caucasus region,
“there are places where women in their 27 are already wrinkled, and by our standards they are nealy 50 years old.” He made clear that the marriage of the underage girls is a norm in Chechnya even-though it is explicitly prohibited by the laws of Russian Federation.
And this is why women from all over the country upload their “wrinkled” selfies to the Instagram and other social networks. Often alongside with the caustic comments toward mr. Astakhov.
More than 35,000 women have signed an online petition asking Astakhov to be removed from office for
“dodging his duty to protect the underaged from violence and making offensive remarks about women.”
Astakhov himself has issued an apology on his Instagram profile:
“Women of any age are splendid and adorable,” he writes. “God created Woman so that we could love her, defend her, take care of her, glorify her. A clumsy comparison, a rash word taken out of the context of discours,e cannot change my attitude to the Fair Sex. I’ve loved, love and shall love and respect [them]! I apologize for the mistake I’ve made!”
